The ring finger of a nine-month-old girl was severed after her hand was allegedly caught in a door at a day care centre in Gurgaon. The kid’s mother has alleged negligence on part of the day care centre staff and shared the incident in a post on a social media website.

Bhawna Rastogi, who works with TCS as senior consultant and is a resident of DLF Phase-4, said in the post on Monday that negligence, “unsafe facility and untrained staff” at Intellitots Daycare Centre “ruined their life”.

The Intellitots Daycare Centre operates from a rented accommodation on the premises of Fortis Memorial Research Institute and is not a part of the hospital.

“I signed up for this day care two months back after having been assured of the hygiene, trained staff, CCTV surveillance, good interiors and their commitment to child’s well being. On Friday, we dropped our daughter at the centre at 10 am and we went for our respective offices. At around 10:30 am we got a call from the day care centre and we reached there by 11 am,” said Bhawna.

She said she found her daughter unconscious with the ring finger in her left hand missing.

“We enquired about the incident and we were told that a maid shut the door while handling her and the finger of my child got caught between the doors,” said the girl’s father Nikhil, who works with Citi Bank.

The child had a surgery on May 19 at a private hospital in the city and she would have to undergo another surgery on Thursday.

The parents alleged that the day care centre refused to share the footage of the incident. “We wanted to see the CCTV footage of that day, however, we were told that the footage for the day was not available,” said Nikhil.

Pooja Goyal, director, Intellitots Day Care Centre, said it was an accident. “We have been running day care centres for the last nine years. The child’s finger got stuck between the doors. Our staff immediately informed the parents and we took care of the child,” said Goyal.

“This is regarding an unfortunate/alleged incident that caused injury to a 9-month-old child at Intellitots, located inside our Gurgaon facility. Intellitots is a day care facility, which has rented out a part of the FMRI facility to run a crèche. Fortis Healthcare has strict protocols and processes to deal with every sentinel event and this incident, even though it involves a third party, will be dealt with the same level of severity. We have started an enquiry into the matter and have served a show-cause notice to the vendor and apt punitive action will be taken,” read a statement released by Fortis Memorial Research Institute.
