Gurgaon: patriotism drives bikers to Kargil heights

It has been 14 years since the Kargil war, but the acts of valour and sacrifices continue to inspire even today. A group of 46 people from Gurgaon left for a bike and car expedition to Kargil on Friday to pay homage to the martyrs of the war.
The group, comprising 20 motorcycles and three cars, will reach Srinagar on July 26 — observed as Kargil Day — and will be received by the Army commander of the battalion concerned.
On their way to Kargil, the group members will be interacting with students at Kurukshetra and Manali.
“I am proud to be associated with the event. I am sure it is going to be an experience of a lifetime. We want to pay homage to our martyrs,” said a member of the expedition group.
The group leader of the expedition, Naveen Gulia, has an inspiring story of his own to share.
He was training to be an army officer and wanted to become a paracommando. After three years of training at the National Defence Academy and six months at the Indian Military Academy, Gulia met with an accident and has been confined to a wheelchair for the past 18 years.
“The group leader can be an inspiration to many. We flagged off the expedition from Rezang La war memorial here. We have been working to help war martyrs get their due recognition,” said TC Rao, convenor, Rezang La Martyrs’ Foundation, the group that has organised the trip.
The chief guests at the flagging-off ceremony were former air chief marshal P Tipnis and former lieutenant general R Lochav.
The ceremony was also attended by several other retired military officials.
