A case of extortion, assault and criminal intimidation was registered by Gurgaon Police against unknown persons after an auto-rickshaw driver was roughed up while taking a man to the MG Road Metro station from an interview earlier this week.

HT had reported the incident on Friday.

The police got in touch with the driver after an outcry following a blog entry by the passenger. He said the attackers had threatened women in another vehicle with rape. The post was widely shared on Internet platforms.

The police registered cases of extortion, assault and criminal intimidation against “unknown  persons” who had attacked the driver in Manesar region on September 15. He had been avoiding filing a police complaint for the fear of being targeted.

The police said the incident was the fallout of a rivalry between auto-rickshaw mafias.  Sketches of the attackers will be released on Saturday.

The victim’s cell phone number was dug out from police records on Friday. Driver Surinder Singh was then asked to go to the DCP south’s office.

Singh gave a written statement to the police. A case was registered against the attackers at the Manesar police station. No one has been arrested yet.

Rahul Sharma, the DCP (south), said, “The blog post evoked strong responses. We begun investigations soon after. The man and the driver were approached on Friday and were asked to come and meet us so that we could take further action.”

The young man who posted the blog, however, deleted the post. The police are probing the presence of another auto-rickshaw with women passengers.
