The traffic police have generated over Rs 2 crore as fines from as many as 85,000 erring drivers during special enforcement drives that began across Gurgaon 45 days ago.
This means more than 1800 vehicles of the nearly 5 Lakh vehicles on Gurgaon roads including the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway are fined on a given day.
Of this, Rs 1 Crore was collected from August 17 till September 11 and another Rs one crore in next 22 days till Sunday, said a police spokesperson.
During the exercise, aimed at improving the traffic conditions by reducing congestion on city roads, as many as 85,000 vehicle owners were penalised for various violations. Those fined include nearly 9000 vehicles for wrong parking and 4,000 for driving in the wrong direction.
Additionally, 5,000 vehicles -- including 3,500 autorickshaws, 500 taxis and 150 other vehicles -- were impounded during the drives, according to the statistics available with police. Besides, over 4000 persons were fined for not wearing seat belts and many others for drunken driving.
“In the past 45 days 85,000 drivers were challaned of which 9,000 for wrong parking, 4,500 for wrong side driving. The total challan amount generated during this period is Rs 2 crore,” said the spokesperson.
Before August 17, when these special drives came to being, the wrongly-parked vehicles got away easily for want of cranes. In the first week of August, the traffic wing was finally equipped with five cranes provided by Municipal Corporation, Gurgaon (MCG) to tow away illegally parked vehicles which helped in increasing. Before that, the police used clamps and deflated car tyres besides imposing a penalty to check illegal parking.
With the result, the cranes and an additional posse of cops in the traffic wing helped in launching enhanced enforcement drive to ensure smooth traffic movement on Gurgaon roads. Gurgaon police increased enforcement of traffic rules on MG road, HUDA City Centre and other metro stations, Sohna Road and Old Delhi Road.
“We had no cranes and traffic cops were also less. Now we are adequately equipped to enforce the law,” a traffic cop said adding that before the drives nearly 1000 erring vehicles were penalised on a giving day.
Also the police has installed jersey barriers and brought many diversions in effect to ensure smooth traffic on city roads. These regular drives began after joint commissioner of police Y Puran Kumar was entrusted the traffic wing in the first week of August. This was one of the changes that the department underwent after rain triggered miles-long snarls on Gurgaon roads, including the Delhi Gurgaon Expressway, on July 28-29.
The action has received applaud form the commuters on social media as well.
