A 41-year-old human resources (HR) head of a multi-national firm on Sohna Road has complained to the police that she has been getting obscene calls and text messages from three unknown numbers for the past 15 days.
“When I started receiving the calls, I blocked the number. However, the person called me from another number and threatened me,” said Meeta (name changed), a Gurgaon resident. She added that she got over 20 calls from the same person over the fortnight.
On Thursday, she filed a complaint at the Sadar police station, which transferred the matter to the women’s police station in Sector 51.
In her complaint, she said that the man has been harassing her by calling on her cellphone and sending lewd messages. “I was shocked to receive such messages and calls. Despite several requests, he did not stop and started abusing me instead,” Meeta said.
She said that she initially ignored the matter, but finally decided to file a complaint when the man started threatening to kill her and her family. “The caller has a lot of information about my personal life and family members. He says he is not scared of the police,” she added.
The number on which she has been getting the calls and messages is her official number and has been with her for seven years.
“Being in human resources, the number is shared for several reasons, including hiring. Who is harassing me and why, I do not know. But the caller seems to know a lot about me,” she said.
Sub-inspector Mukesh Devi, the investigating officer, said the numbers from which the calls are being made have been sent for verification. “We received a complaint on Thursday and are investigating the matter. We are going through the call records and data of the mobile numbers of the accused,” Devi said.
An FIR under sections 506 (criminal intimidation), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 354D (stalking) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered.
