After a special weekend drive against drunken driving in Gurgaon between 10pm and 4am on Friday, almost 50% drivers stopped for checking were found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.
Most offenders were spotted around the MG Road and the Gurgaon Expressway on Friday evening.
Of the total 300 vehicles checked by the police, 145 drivers were challaned for drunken driving. Around 15 teams, including four comprising women personnel, were deployed across the city, mainly New Gurgaon localities such as the mall mile, DLF City, Sushant Lok and South City.
The drive kicked off at MG Road and the city police were on a tight vigil till the Delhi border on the Gurgaon Expressway toll plaza, including Shankar Chowk, Iffco Chowk, Faridabad road and Golf Course Road. The inspection continued till 4am on Saturday. According to the police, 28 women also took the alcohol test on the breath analyzer but only one was fined.
"This drive was launched to reduce the number of road accidents and spread awareness among commuters about the dangers of drunken driving. If anyone is caught twice, the driving licence would be recommended for cancellation and a prison term is also possible," said Ravinder Tomar, ACP (traffic).
