Thanks to presence of over 500 IT-BPO firms, e-waste is fast becoming an environment challenge in Gurgaon. The authorities are initiating measures to record and identify disposal mechanisms.

“We do not have official records of e-waste as it is an emerging trend here. However, we have initiated measures to record and identify disposal mechanisms,” said Bhupender Singh, regional officer, Haryana Pollution Control Board (HPCB), Gurgaon South.

The pollution board recently notified all major industries in the area producing e-waste to register with it so that their waste can be monitored.

There are three private dismantling units handling e-waste in the Gurgaon-Manesar area. According to sources, a recycling unit is also being planned.

Some industry experts, however, say that e-waste generated in Gurgaon is still at a nascent stage since there aren’t many manufacturing units for electronic products
