Nine days after the hit-and-run incident that led to Jiya’s death on Tuesday, the police have not been able to arrest anyone.
The only development in the case is that the driver of the school bus, Vinod, surrendered before the court on Tuesday. He was later released on bail.
Jiya’s father had registered a complaint at the Sector 4 police outpost. The police registered an FIR against the driver of the car under sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life) and 338 (grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.
“Now, after her death, the sections under which the driver is booked has changed. He is now also booked under section 304 A (death due to negligence) of the IPC,” a police officer said.
The car driver speed away after running over Jiya and the only clue that the police have is that it was a white car. If CCTV camera footage from the area is not available, the police will have to rely solely on eyewitness accounts.
“We have taken testimonies of witnesses and the probe is on,” assistant commissioner of police Hawa Singh said.
Ryan International School agreed to pay for the girl’s treatment only after a protest by parents at the school’s Sector 40 branch on last Friday.
