A 49-year-old man was shot dead by an unidentified assailant on Wednesday on Gurgaon’s Golf Course Road in front of the Suncity Business Tower.

The man, who died on the spot, has been identified as Anil Kumar Shukla a resident of Delhi’s Karawal Nagar near Yamuna Dairy.

According to eye witnesses, Shukla was walking towards the building at around 9am when they saw a man trying to snatch his bag. Though several men were standing outside the building, including guards, no one intervened and tried to help him.

“The man and the youth fought for about 10 minutes. The youth was assaulting him and the deceased was struggling to save his bag which probably contained cash. After a few minutes, the youth took out a gun and shot at his chest. Then he rushed to the road where a motorbike was waiting for him and he boarded the bike and fled with another youth,” Bhupinder Singh, a cab driver who was present at the scene, said.

The guards informed the police control room and the SHO of the Sector 56 police station rushed to the crime spot along with his team. Deputy commissioner of police (east) Deepak Saharan and assistant commissioner of police (Sadar) Dharna Yadav also reached the spot.

Police found two live cartridges lying on the ground.

“We have informed the family members and they will reach shortly. Meanwhile, we have sent body for post-mortem and FSL (forensic science laboratory) team reached the spot within half an hour. We have recorded the statements of the eyewitnesses and are trying to get CCTV footage to identify the accused,” Saharan said.
