Manesar growth engine stuck in e-way jams

Already reeling under labour unrests and land acquisition controversies, the Industrial Model Township (IMT), Manesar, which is about 20 kilometres from here, also has to deal with another issue: The connectivity issue. And, apparently there is no relief in sight.
Nearly halfway towards IMT, one has to face the daunting task of crossing the Kherki Daula toll plaza which is situated at one end of the 27.5-kilometre-long Delhi-Gurgaon expressway. Coupled with the ongoing construction of the Pink City flyover, which begins immediately after the toll plaza, the traffic chaos on way to Manesar is never-ending.
According to Manmohan Gaind, general secretary of industry body Manesar Industries Welfare Association (Miwa), about R2,000 crore worth of ready-to-use property at IMT have no takers because of the commutation problems posed by the Kherki Daula toll plaza and the ongoing highway construction beyond the toll.
“With over 3,000 small, medium and big industries in and around IMT, the business potential of the area can be at least five times higher than its present worth of R9,000 crore if Manesar gets hassle-free connectivity from Gurgaon,” he said.
“There is so much of public money which is being extracted in the name of toll tax. We pay the toll apart from paying all other taxes to the government. Yet, if a smooth ride is not ensured by the toll operator, what’s the point of having an expressway,” asks Amina Shervani, a Manesar industrialist.
What makes matters worse is the fact that both before and after the Kherki Daula toll plaza, there are major bottlenecks on National Highway-8 of which the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway is a part.
Apart from the construction work of the Pink City flyover, the infamous Hero Honda Chowk traffic congestion on the expressway, which has been a problem area since the expressway was opened for the public, takes an additional toll on the commuters.
As a result, industrial units in areas like Infocity in Sector 34 and Sector 37 institutional area incur considerable financial losses.
A spokesperson of the expressway concessionaire, DGSCL, said the situation was much better after the expansion of the toll plaza and blamed the authorities for allowing heavy vehicles park on the roadside.
The situation of the industrial sector at IMT, however, remains bleak and hapless.
