A mobile phone theft has turned into a blackmail nightmare for a Gurgaon resident.
Vishal Singh (name changed), who works in CyberHub, lost his mobile phone at the hotel he was staying in during a vacation last October and when he couldn’t find it despite several efforts, he registered a complaint with the local police and moved on.
But his trauma started soon after. In March this year the CyberHub employee allegedly received a call from an unknown person who said he had “very personal videos and pictures” of Vishal and his friends in his possession he would leak them on WhatsApp, YouTube, and Facebook, if Vishal didn’t pay him Rs80 lakh.
While initially he dismissed it as a prank call, Vishal soon realised that the passwords to his emails and social media accounts had been compromised and several pictures that he had deleted after losing his phone had been retrieved. His phone also had some photos and videos of personal nature, Gurgaon police said.
The calls and texts continued, and the demand remained the same — pay up Rs80 lakh or the photos and videos would turn up on social media and elsewhere on the internet. They also threatened to leak the photos if he approached the police.
However, with no other place to go, he finally filed a complaint with the Gurgaon police on Monday.
“Initially, he tried negotiating with the extortionists. But when he couldn’t think of any solution, he approached us,” said Sudip Singh, station house officer (SHO), DLF Phase 1.
Singh said they’re trying to find the culprits and have formed some teams to be sent to the place where the phone was stolen.
An FIR in this regard has been registered under sections 379 (theft) and 384 (extortion) of the Indian Penal Code.
