The Millennium City has long been neglected by the administration. The city, which is fast growing as an IT centre and a hub of young professionals, lacks proper planning and maintenance.

Barring few, most of the service lanes have either been encroached upon or damaged. Many private builders have encroached upon service lanes at many places, leading to congestion and accidents.

The service lanes along the Gurgaon Expressway have completely disappeared or are fast vanishing. The 12-metre-wide service lane along the expressway is hardly visible now between the two toll gates.

Similar is the case with the 60-metre and 30-metre wide roads. The Gurgaon Master Plan had earmarked 10-metre wide service lane along the 60-metre-wide road and a nine-metre-wide service lane along the 30-metre-wide road.

But this is rarely available. Reason: the city administration's lackadaisical attitude. Moreover, encroachments have been ruining the city - making the lanes narrower and difficult to traverse.

Service lanes and pavements are mostly built for the convenience of commuters and pedestrians. The Gurgaon Citizens Council (GCC), an apex body representing the developers' areas, has also raised this issue with the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda), but to no avail.
