An owner of a cattle shelter near Basai village was allegedly shot by two of his relatives on Wednesday night. The police said the accused, nephews of the deceased, wanted to avenge their mother’s death.
According to the police, the accused believed that Sandeep Kataria, the victim, was involved in their mother’s murder 10 years ago. But, the police also suspect that cow smugglers from Mewat may be responsible for Sandeep’s murder as he used to rescue cows.
The Sector 10A police have registered a murder case against five men, including the two nephews.
According to the police, accused Johhny Kataria and Moni Kataria, along with their friend Ankur, reached Sandeep’s five-acre cattle shelter, Shri Krishna Gaushala, in Sector 9 around 9pm.
Police said Johhny and Moni shot Sandeep with 4.75mm pistols in the head and chest. The accused fled from the spot but workers at the cattle shelter identified them. They rushed Sandeep to a private hospital in Sector 38, where doctors declared him brought dead, the police said. A police team from the Sector 10A police station recovered three bullet casings from the spot.
Sandeep’s nephews had tried to kill him in August 2013 too, the police said.
Meanwhile, the police also learnt that Sandeep, popularly known as Sandeep Shooter, had several cases of assault and attempt to murder against him.
He was also actively involved in cattle rescue operations in Gurgaon and was a member of Gau Raksha Dal, a voluntary group that works to prevent the slaughter and smuggling of cows.
“We have registered a case against five men on the basis of the complaint by Sandeep’s wife Sarita. His sister was shot dead 10 years ago over an alleged family dispute. This is a case of family dispute and the nephews had earlier also attacked Sandeep. Sandeep had several cases against him,” ACP (City) Kishori Lal said.
The body was handed over to the family after a post-mortem examination on Thursday. Dr Deepak Mathur, forensic expert at the Civil Hospital, who conducted the autopsy, said, “There were three bullet injuries in the head and chest. He was shot from close range. Sandeep died due to the head injury. The other two bullets hit him in the chest.”
Sandeep’s supporters and members of Gau Raksha Dal blocked the Gurgaon-Farrukhnagar road for over an hour. The protesters demanded immediate arrest of the accused. It was only after police assurance that they called off the protest.
