The Gurgaon postal department launched a mechanised delivery service on Friday under which postmen were trained to use bikes and deliver packages like courier boys.

Postmaster general of Gurgaon Umesh Verma flagged off the service that will cover Gurgaon city, Galleria, DLF phases, Sectors 14, 45, 56, South City and Udyog Vihar. The department has bought 11 GPS-enabled vehicles that will help in the speedy delivery from the post office in Udyog Vihar Phase 5.

The mechanised delivery service went through a one-month trial run wherein 300-400 parcels were delivered during this period.

“We are also planning to introduce a cash-on-delivery service. The post office in Udyog Vihar will be developed as an e-commerce hub for Gurgaon as it has becomes a major revenue generator. We have major e-commerce clients and this is going to be a major facility for delivery services,” said Verma.

Under the new service, parcels and mails would no longer be sent to the branch post offices but will be directly dispatched from Udyog Vihar, Verma said.

The service will also be introduced in Faridabad. If it succeeds in these cities, the department will implement it in other districts of Haryana. The department has also planned to launch a same-day delivery service on October 15 to deliver perishable items such as flowers and sweets.

The Gurgaon postal department is undergoing a major transformation and the new services will help the department tackle with competition from the private sector. “Our skills and reach are unmatched,” Verma said.

Meanwhile, to mark National Postal Week, the department has planned fairs on October 10 to encourage people to save money.

It aims to open 25,000 new deposits. On October 12, the department will observe Mail Day and introduce the facility of pack-post wherein packing boxes and other material will be made available to customers in post offices.

On October 13, Philately Day, the department will display stamp collections of students, and hold drawing and stamp designing competition at the philately bureau.

Additionally, the postal department is looking for franchisees in Gurgaon, who can offer all postal services including banking to customers.

“The department is looking to expand its services across Gurgaon and serve customers in a better way,” Verma said.
