Fed up by a six-hour power cut, a retired judge allegedly fired gun shots in the air and at the employees of a contractor working with the power discom Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitaran Nigam (DHBVN). The contractor’s employees had gone to repair power lines in the upscale Civil Lines area that is home to many top bureaucrats, government officials and a state cabinet minister.

One of the employees, Devender Kumar, said they had cut the electricity supply between 12pm and 6pm on Wednesday to change a power cable in the area.

However, he added, when they went to restart the power in the evening, the former judge came out of his house and abused them, before going back in.

“He returned with a revolver and fired five shots, four of which hit the tyres of a tractor. We were saved by the fact that five of our men took cover behind the tractor trolley,” he said.

Police detained the retired judge immediately after the incident. His licensed revolver was also seized by Sector 15 police officials, who said that the matter is being investigated.
