Enraged over an eve-teasing incident, a group of men on Tuesday opened fire at a college student outside the police post near Sector 10 on Pataudi Road. The police arrested one person and booked seven others on charges of attempt to murder.
Meanwhile, two policemen have been suspended as they failed to prevent the incident.
The 25-year-old victim, Mahesh Kumar, is a B.Com student of Government College in Gurgaon. According to the police, Kumar tried to tease a Class 11 student of the Gurgaon Government School. When the accused, Sandeep Singh, tried to stop him, an argument followed.
Both Singh and the girl belong to Narsinghpur village.
The police was informed about the incident and they had called both men to the Pataudi Road police post on Tuesday morning.
While Sandeep was inside the police post with his family, Mahesh was sitting in an Alto car outside.
Around 1pm, however, a white Mahindra Scorpio car with seven men inside reached the spot and one of the occupants fired at the Alto car.
The bullet splinters hit Mahesh.
He was immediately rushed to the civil hospital where doctors said he was out of danger.
Sandeep was arrested on the spot. After the shootout, the family members of Mahesh took to the streets and disrupted traffic, demanding immediate arrest of the seven accused.
DCP (west) Surinder Pal reached the spot to placate the irate mob and clear a traffic jam that followed.
"We will arrest the accused soon. We have also suspended the police post in-charge, sub-inspector Arvind Singh, and head constable Amir Singh," Pal said.
