Inspired by Brandon Stanton, founder of Humans of New York, a website that tells interesting stories of people of the city of New York in USA, three school students from Gurgaon has started a similar initiative — Humans of Gurgaon.
The trio met Stanton during his visit to Delhi in 2014. “Stanton really motivated us to do something different and influential. Finally, we planned Humans of Gurgaon, a Facebook page where we could share inspiring stories and help underprivileged people by writing about them,” says Anshul Rawat, founder of the page. And their mission has been successful. “We did a post on underprivileged children who want to study. After that post, several people offered help by sponsoring their education,” shares Rawat.
Along with Rawat, two of his friends, Mili Mathur and Pankhuri Sharma, are also contributing to the page. Mili is the editor and Pankhuri is the administrator. The page has 3800 likes, but more than the popularity, the founders are happy with the change that they have been able to bring about. “I feel happy by bringing small changes in the lives of people,” she adds.
The team goes out in the field once a month to meet people and bring back their stories. “There are specific areas assigned to each one of us. Being school students, it is sometimes hard for us to go out due to study pressure but we try to visit once a month. I enjoy talking to people, and knowing about their lives and inspiring stories. Currently, the academic pressure is high and we have put our reporting on hold,” says Pankhuri.
