With a spurt in rape, molestation and other crimes against women in Gurgaon, the women no longer feel safe in the city.

Incidents of eve teasing and harassment have also raised concern over women’s safety in the city.

“I don’t prefer going out alone after 9 pm. This city feels unsafe. MG Road is expecially unsafe after sundown,” Neha Bansal, who works in Sector 30 as a testing engineer in an IT firm, said.

She narrated an incident where some passerbys teased her while she was alone one evening at Sector 31. “Some boys started hooting while I was waiting for my cab alone on the street in the evening,” Bansal told HT.

Safety is a big concern, especially among the city’s working women, as they feel unsafe commuting to and from work.

Till June, 2017, 58 rape cases have been registered in Gurgaon, while another 53 cases were filed under the Pocso Act (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012). The police also filed 148 cases of molestation.

Suchitra Tanwar, an assistant manager in a private company said, “There are not enough streetlights in the city. It scares me.”

Jyoti, a resident of Manesar, said she is often targeted by eve-teasers while outdoors on work. “I regularly travel from my office in Gurgaon to Manesar on my scooty and often, some people on bikes ride close to me and pass lewd comments,” Jyoti said.

Divya Popli, a Delhi resident who works in an IT firm in Gurgaon, said the auto-rickshaw drivers should be vetted and their antecedents properly verified. She said auto drivers often harass women passengers.

Rising cases of crime against women have called women’s safety in the city into question. On Monday night, a 35-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped in a moving car and later thrown off in Noida.

The same day, a 5-year-old was allegedly raped by her neighbour in a slum in Sector 45. The incident came just a day after a 7-year-old girl was raped in Dundahera . The accused in both the cases have been arrested.

On Friday, two young women were allegedly groped outside a mall at MG Road and asked for ‘their rates’. A few days back, a fashion designer was allegedly molested at the Iffco Chowk metro station.

A police spokesperson said that patrolling has been stepped up on MG Road, near metro stations, bus stands, and crowded places to curb such incidents.
