The Haryana government has decided to give Rs. 1 lakh as cash reward to those who marry outside their castes.
The move is aimed at encouraging inter-caste marriages. Earlier, under the inter-caste marriage scheme, such couples used to get Rs. 50,000 as cash reward.
This decision was taken at a meeting of the state level vigilance and monitoring committee held in Chandigarh under the chairmanship of the chief minister, Manohar Lal Khattar. It had been constituted under Rule 16 of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The chief minister said that with the hike in the reward money, the number of inter-caste marriages would go up. The move would also help in decreasing caste discrimination in the society.
The chief minister said that such assistance should be provided through bank accounts under the Prime Minister Jan-Dhan Yojana.
