If one commutes from Sushant Lok Phase-1 in Gurgaon to Delhi every day as I do, one would have surely suffered the frustrating traffic bottlenecks at Iffco Chowk.
Between 8.30am and 10.30am, the Delhi-bound traffic flow on MG Road is at its peak.
The often-dysfunctional traffic lights at Iffco Chowk on MG Road below the expressway, along with the signal barely 50 metres away, causes the formation of mile-long queues of cars on this busy stretch.
The waiting time at these pile-ups can be anywhere between 10 minutes and 20 minutes.
Thus, negotiating the Iffco Chowk junction has become as bad as negotiating the toll plazas on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway.
The long-term remedy of the Iffco Chowk problem is construction of an underpass.
In the short term, some easy-to-implement and cost-effective steps can be taken urgently.
Between 8am and 11am, only a left turn should be allowed near the second traffic light that I have referred to earlier for the traffic coming from Old Gurgaon towards MG Road.
Vehicles intending to move to MG Road should take a U-turn before the toll plaza in front of Ambience Mall.
A comparative study of the volume of Delhi-bound traffic on MG Road in the morning and traffic moving below the expressway from exit points 6 to 7 should be made and the traffic signal timing at Iffco Chowk should be adjusted accordingly.
The signals need to be re-aligned so that they function in a flawless manner reducing traffic congestion.
I think the steps outlined above will improve the situation considerably at Iffco Chowk during the peak hours.
