The police arrested three minors, including an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh, on Friday for allegedly being involved in 15-20 burglaries in the city.

A Delhi-based jeweller, Amit Kumar, who used to purchase stolen jewellery from them, has also been held.

All the accused minors have been sent to a juvenile shelter home in Faridabad and Kumar to 14 days' judicial custody in Bhondsi jail.

Recently, the three stole jewellery worth Rs4 lakh and Rs50,000 cash from a house in South City-II. A complaint was also registered at Sadar police station.

The three boys lived in the slums of Samastpur village.

The youngest, 13-year-old Naushad (name changed), claims to be a native of Bangladesh and had come with his mother a year ago.

His mother allegedly married someone else and abandoned him. Naushad has no passport, visa or any other documents to prove his identity.

Another boy Pritam (name changed), 16, belongs to Madhya Pradesh and Ishan (name changed), 14, is from West Bengal. All of them have been staying together for the last one year and had become good friends.

Inspector Sanjeev Balhara of the crime investigation cell, Sector 10, said, “The boys started off with petty thefts at construction sites by stealing construction material and sanitary fittings. Later, they started targeting residential areas.”

He added, “They used to first visit a specific area and keep a watch till night. They used to identify houses where there had been no movement through the day. When they confirmed there was no one at home, the boys used to jump in from the backyard and loot the house.”
