Visitors flock to see ethnic hues at Surajkund international crafts fair
An array of handicraft items displayed amid a series of stage shows performed by artistes from across the country are attracting a large number of visitors at Surajkind International Crafts Mela in Faridabad.
An array of handicraft items displayed amid a series of stage shows performed by artistes from across the country are attracting a large number of visitors at Surajkind International Crafts Mela in Faridabad.
Exhibitors from various parts of the country and abroad are participating in the 15-day annual fair, which was inaugurated by President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday.
Life-size showpieces based on various themes carved intricately on rosewood are displayed by an artist from Karnataka. According to the exhibitor, the inlay work is not restricted to just wood, but it is also done in zinc, copper alloy and silver base, which is known as Bidriware.
Visitors can also see and buy hundreds of wooden toys and lacquerware furniture displayed at the fair.
V Panneer Selvam, a national awardee from Tamil Nadu, has amazing Tanjore paintings of Gods and Goddesses made of gold foil. "It is an intricate and painstaking art. I have been to Surajkund about four to five times now. It is a great platform for an artist like me", he said.
Anil from Arooti Antiques, Jaipur also comes to the fair regularly with his master pieces. "My marble artifacts with stone work are adorning the houses of many political leaders. I get good response and recognition of my work here," he said.
The open air theatre - Chaupal-remains packed to its full capacity throughout the day as people flock to see spectacular performances of dance troupes from several states and countries like Tajikistan, and Namibia.
On Sunday, the Chaupal was jam-packed when artistes from Karnataka performed at Natyashala.
Among those who visited the fair on Sunday included Supreme Court judge RP Sharma, Namibian high commissioner Samuel Mbumbo and several government officials.
