Construction of parking lots in Old Gurgaon areas is likely to get delayed for a couple of months as the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) is yet to finalise the sites for the proposed facilities.
Huda had identified 15 sites in various markets from sectors 1 to 23 and other commercial sites two months ago and it was supposed to float tenders on March 19.
But, according to a Huda official, the tenders are likely to be floated in May as the authority has decided to review the entire project and prepare a fresh plan.
“We are revising the entire project. This may take a few more months,” said Narender S Yadav, Huda estate officer (EO).
Huda administrator Praveen Kumar asked the EO to identify more parking sites in Old Gurgaon so that maximum number of people can benefit.
“We need to do a fresh survey to prepare feasibility reports and identify more sites in Old Gurgaon,” said Yadav.
Opposition from a section of residents against paid parking may be a reason for delay in the project.
Unlike New Gurgaon, the old city has less commercial sites and shopping complexes. Also, many residents are opposed to paid parking at market places.
“The visitors to Huda markets are mainly locals and they hardly pay parking fee,” said another Huda official.
In New Gurgaon’s Sector 31 market, where Huda opened a paid parking lot in January, there were a series of protests from residents.
“Why should we pay Rs.10 on parking at the local market,” said Dharamsagar, president of the federation of residents’ welfare association of urban estate (Forwa).
