A 20-year-old youth from Fazilpur village in the city committed suicide on Saturday morning due to alleged harassment by some policemen, following which scores of locals held a protest demanding action against the accused cops.
As the news of the youth’s death spread, residents of the village gathered at Fazilpur Chowk around 3 pm and held a three-hour-long protest till 6pm. Manish Yadav, committed suicide by hanging himself in his house on Saturday morning.
According to his relatives, he was being continuously harassed by some policemen in connection with a case that was registered against him for attacking two constables on January 7.
According to the police, Manish was identified as one of three accused who had attacked the two policemen at a check-post on Sohna Road when the cops had stopped them while driving a two wheeler without a number plate.
Manish and his two friends had bashed the police constables Rajesh Kumar and Kamal Singh, leaving them badly injured. A case was registered against them at the Sadar Bazar police station.
Manish’s relatives alleged that police officials, on the pretext of investigation, were harassing Manish and they had provoked him to commit suicide.
“Manish had mentioned how police officials were asking bribe to dismiss the case,” said a relative, requesting anonymity.
SHO of Sadar Bazar Vijay Kumar, however, said, “Manish might have committed suicide fearing the consequences of the case against him.”
However, a case has been registered against constables Rajesh Kumar, Kamal Singh and ASI Narender Kumar for allegedly harassing Manish.
Narender Kumar is investigating the case against Manish.
