In yet another move to empower women, the Bibipur village panchayat on Wednesday inaugurated a library for women in Mahila Chaupal village, Jind district, commissioned at a cost of `5 lakh by the ministry of panchayati raj, New Delhi, recently. National volleyball player Poonam Chauhan inaugurated the library, which contains over 1800 books on feminism.
In July 2012, the Bibipur village panchayat had organised a maha-khap panchayat for the first time to rein in the practice of female foeticide and spread awareness on saving the girl child.
Village sarpanch Sunil Jaglan said the library was established to empower girls through the power of knowledge. He said books were the best medium to inculcate a sense of confidence in girls.
He stated that the new library had books on women icons such as Indira Gandhi, Kiran Bedi, Sarojini Nadu, Rani Laxmi Bai, among others. He said these books, which were either in Hindi and English, were selected after consultation with university professors, women activists, khap leaders. "A 10-member committee, comprising of village women who would supervise the functioning of library, would be formed ", added Jaglan.
