State to have SC cells at district, police station levels

The state government has decided to constitute scheduled castes or scheduled tribes protection cells at state, district and police station levels.

The director general of police Shriniwas Vashisht said in a release on Tuesday that state level SC and the ST protection cell, constituting an additional director general level officer, would assist him in the day-to-day functioning at the state police headquarters, Panchkula and would be responsible for general implementation of the provisions contained in the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (POA) Act, 1989 and the Rules, the Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955 and other affirmative actions.

He said that on the similar lines, a crime against SC and ST cell would be established in each district by the concerned commissioner of police (CP) or superintendent of police (SP) with an assistant superintendent of police (ASP) or deputy superintendent of police (DSP) as incharge for implementation of the provisions of the acts and rules as well as monitoring of such issues at the district level.

He said that one non-gazetted officer belonging to scheduled caste would be posted in every police station by the concerned CP or SP for handling the complaints and grievances of the members of the SC and ST community.
