Highlight Story

From her gorgeous debut in Parineeta, her hot looks in The Dirty Picture to her deglamed look in Kahaani, and her classy appearances in a sari, actor Vidya Balan has always managed to impress all with her simplistic charm.

The 34-year-old actor, who believes that beauty lies in inner happiness, gets candid about her simple fitness tricks.

What’s your definition of fitness?
Fitness to me is to maintain a balance - eat in moderation and exercise regularly. Do not deprive yourself what you crave for. Listen to your body, it always tells you how it needs to be treated and when you are going right or wrong. Above all, the trick is to stay happy and content to get that healthy glow.

How did you go about gaining weight (for The Dirty Picture) in a healthy way, and how did you manage to lose all that that flab so quickly?
I had meals with the right balance of proteins, carbohydrates, and the right kinds of fat (such as unsaturated and monounsaturated fats, olive oil, pistachios, almonds and walnuts). I drank a lot of mixed juices (apple, berry, mango, orange, banana). Of course, I had my share of desserts.

In order to lose weight, I reduced my food portions and consumption of sugary snacks; and opted for healthy and crispy multigrain snacks, and low-fat nuts. This way, I can satisfy my taste buds without feeling guilty.

What do you like to munch on amid shots when you are shooting all day?
Since shooting schedules can be hectic and unpredictable, I try to eat in small portions throughout the day in order to keep the energy meter running. However, I always felt guilty munching snacks because there is a general perception that snacks that are tasty can’t be healthy and vice versa. But, multi-grain snacks such as Aliva come as a saviour. They are both tasty and healthy.

Any fashion tips for our readers?
The trick is to be happy and confident about yourself and your body. Wear things that you think will bring out the best in you. What matters is personal style and not what’s in fashion. I prefer to drape a sari as it is traditional and at the same time sexy and sensual.
