Diet conscious Mumbaikars have reason to cheer. A tiffin service in the city is now offering a double bonanza. Apart from actually getting nutritionists to monitor the calorie intake, Dr’s Kitchen (that’s what it is called) also offers loyal patrons free health check-ups. The results of the check-ups are then studied and further modifications are made to the existing diet. These tiffins are available along the Western route and are delivered by Mumbai’s ‘six sigma-certified’ dabbawallas.

“The idea came about when I met with an accident. It was then that I realised that the city lacks healthy tiffin options. Also, those days are gone when people ate anything at all,” says Vinod Saleen, who founded Dr’s Kitchen for people who want to live a healthy life and are looking to fight lifestyle diseases like obesity and stress-related problems.

His partner, Dr Sanjay Chaube, looks at the medical side of the tiffin project.

To avail of the service, you need to fill out a form that lists the kind of lifestyle you follow. This involves mentioning details like what kid of job you do (desk or travelling), eating habits, exercise regime you follow, how often you eat out, as well as listing how much you smoke, drink and past medical history.

Based on the information provided, a diet plan is chalked out by dieticians that are on board. “We have various tiffin packages and all of them use very little oil,” says Saleen.

The tiffins are a mix of various cuisines but only serve vegetarian food.

Patrons who follow the plan for at least six months also get free health check-ups. This includes a blood test, checking for fat percentage and blood pressure as well as keeping tabs on body mass index.

Dr Chaube conducts these tests. The results are then studied and the diet is then further modified to suit the customer.
“These tests are conducted twice a year and are a part of our service,” says Saleen.
