health-and-fitness Updated: Jan 17, 2010 15:26 IST

Highlight Story

While some weight gain is a normal part of pregnancy, gaining too much weight can lead to complications, including high blood pressure, diabetes, birth injuries, etc. Here are tips on keeping a check on your and your baby’s health:

Daily meal plan

8-12 servings of fruits and vegetables

6-10 servings of whole grains

140-255 g of protein-rich foods

3 servings of low-fat dairy products

3-7 teaspoons of healthy fat

Weight-control tips

Eat only 100 to 300 extra calories a day

Have regular meals and small, healthy snacks; go easy on sweets and keep fats to less than 30 per cent of calories
