Ancient medicine of the Vedic period believed that the physical body was only one layer among several layers of energy that make up a body. Chinese medicine and spiritual scholars believe the same and several medical techniques like acupuncture have evolved from their deep understanding of the various layers of the human energy form.
According to the theory of energy medicine, there are five layers of energy. In Indian texts, these layers are called kosh or sheaths of the body. The first is the physical body, which is maintained by the food we eat.
Hence, it is called the annamayi kosh or food layer. The second is the layer maintained by breathing and the gases we inhale, particularly oxygen. This is called pranmayi kosh (the word ‘prana’ being the term used for life energy since we understand life and death as the presence of breathing or the absence of breathing).
The third layer is manomayi kosh, which is maintained and fed by thoughts, sensations and the emotions. It is also fed by the actions and reactions of the physical world, including disappointments and happiness.
The next layer is vigyanmayi kosh – the sheath of the intellect, knowledge, power of discernment and intuition. The last is anandmayi kosh or eternal bliss. Life’s stressors affect the energy flows of the body by causing blockages due to persistent negative thoughts.
When an energy is blocked, the result is a disease that progresses from the energy body to the physical body. Techniques like acupuncture, acupressure, energy tapping, Reiki and pranic healing are used to unblock these energies. Here’s how.
Acupuncture and Reiki
Your body is healthy if all its energy forces are in balance. In the Chinese system of energy, Ying and Yang (inside and outside) are the terms used for the two principal energy flows.
When we are ill, energy is blocked. The reason for the blockage is usually a persistent problem at the thought level, which could be anger, fear, grief, guilt or other negative emotions.
Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing systems in the world. It can be used to treat a variety of conditions, from back pain, headaches, and menstrual cramps to simply maintaining wellness.
Scientific research has shown that acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord and brain. These chemicals decrease inflammation and pain and restore balance to the hormone system.
Reiki is a specific type of subtle energy work in which healing is performed by the touch of the hands, allowing the flow of the energy from a limitless source (cosmic energy force) to the patient via the Reiki practitioner. It is a powerful, yet gentle energy that can be channelled to anyone.
