Why do we hate models? Because they’re tall, gorgeous and get to wear designer clothes for a living. But while that doesn’t sound like much work, keeping those bodies in ramp shape isn’t always easy.
According to models Freddy Daruwala and Shamita Singha, skipping is the best way to get fit in a hurry, especially if you need to fit into size zero garments. “You don’t need space, it’s a low maintenance workout and helps burn fat for those people who really want to lose weight quickly,” says Daruwala.
Singha chips in saying, “Being a model, we need to travel a lot and have erratic schedules. I just carry a skipping rope along so that I can squeeze in a quick workout whenever I have the time. It works all parts of the body including the thighs, stomach, shoulders and buttocks.”Another favourite tip is eating plenty of salads and soups. "We need to keep our skin hydrated and salads give you plenty of water without much fat. Also, it satisfies your craving for spicy food," explains Daruwala, adding he avoids heavy carbs during the day except for lunch because it makes him feel lethargic.
“But you can’t veer off your regular eating schedule too much,” he warns. Singha avoids carb-heavy meals at night, saying, “I have a light dinner and stick to soups and salads. But my breakfast and lunch are wholesome.” For those planning to take a leaf or two out of their fitness regimen, Daruwala offers some advice.
“This is the basic exercise-diet routine that works for most people, but it might take longer for some. So it’s important to be patient, but you’ll eventually get there,” he says.
Push-ups and pull-ups help tone the upper body, especially the chest, shoulders, biceps and triceps.
When working out, allow a maximum break of 60 seconds between sets so that your heart rate remains at an optimum 130, which helps burn fat.
Circuit training which concentrates on two exercises per body part is ideal for those with little time on hand to work out.
Three weeks before fashion week begins, increase your exercise routine by half an hour. Ten days prior, stop weight training and focus on cardio to burn extra fat
Most models love getting a tan right before the fashion week because tanned bodies tend to look fitter and more toned.
Modify your exercise routine depending on location and time of day to keep things interesting.
