Fitness forever

Do not aim for fitness for the satisfaction of superficial needs but realise the importance of fitness in life. Fitness is, in fact, one of the most integral parts of life, says Abhay Deol.

Do not aim for fitness for the satisfaction of superficial needs but realise the importance of fitness in life. Fitness is, in fact, one of the most integral parts of life, says Abhay Deol.

I started working out: Only after my first film Socha na tha. Earlier, I was always active. I had been a swimmer during my school days and I love to perform yoga, but I was never very serious regarding any fitness regime. I have always been fit and I did have a routine but I was never tied to it nor did I make it compulsory. It was only when I started working in films that I felt that I had to consider my exercise routine more seriously because I had to look fit on screen.

My gym: My parent’s home. Actually, my brother has a personal gym at home so I work out there.

Fitness for me: Is to eat healthy. If we want to live as fit human beings, then we need to eat right.

My diet: I eat jowar or bajre ki roti, lots of sprouts and brown rice. I have a nutritionist who has recommended a list of healthy foods and I generally stick to it. I avoid sugar and bread. I am not very rigid about my diet but I do keep a track of what goes into my tummy. When I am shooting, of course, I have no option but to neglect my diet. But when I am at home, I try and eat my dinner by seven in the evening.

My fitness guru: Iyengar, my yoga guru.

The hero with a body I envy the most: Nobody. If I see somebody with an amazing physique, I would just say bahut fit lagta hai. I personally would never go in for huge muscles till the time a film script that I like requires the big muscled look from me.

My best feature: My nose. I want to see how long it grows. The best complement I have got for my physique: Somebody told me: “Oh my God, you are so thin; you look bigger on screen.”

Relationship between fitness and health: One comes free with the other.

Relationship between fitness and self-confidence: They go hand in hand.

My advice for young people who are aspiring to be fit: Do not aim for fitness for the satisfaction of superficial needs but realise the importance of fitness in life. Fitness is, in fact, one of the most integral parts of life.
