Healthy eating prevents a second heart attack

A heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables and fish significantly reduces the chance of a second heart attack and stroke in people with cardiovascular disease, McMaster University researchers have found.

The study discovered those who ate a heart-healthy diet had 35% reduction in risk for cardiovascular death; 14% reduction in risk for new heart attacks; 28% reduction in risk for congestive heart failure and 19% reduction in risk for stroke.

Drug treatments like Aspirin, substantially lower the risk of another heart attack, but a quality diet significantly lowers the risk.

Popular TV Chef Recipes ‘Less Healthy’

If you are one of those who copy recipes given by chefs on TV, then you need to think again.

Recipes created by popular television chefs contain significantly more energy, protein, fat, and saturated fat and less fibre per portion than supermarket ready meals, finds a study.

It suggests including nutritional information on recipes in cookery books. It sguggests regulation of the recipes demonstrated by television chefs similar to that limiting advertisement of foods classified as high in fat, salt, or sugar, they add.

Both supermarket ready meals and television chef recipes influence many peoples’ diets, and being overweight boosts rates of diabetes, heart disease and even cancer.

Triclosan in cosmetics can increase allergy risk

Triclosan — an antibacterial chemical found in toothpaste and other products — can contribute to an increased risk of allergy development in children.

Triclosan has been in use for decades, but was recently associated with allergies in children in an American study.

The component can change the bacterial flora on the skin, in the mouth and in the intestines. A change in the bacterial composition of good bacteria can cause an increased risk of developing allergies. Therefore, increased use of triclosan and antibacterial products has generally been associated with an increased incidence of allergies.

People should reduce the use of antibacterial products to prevent the development of resistant bacteria.

Older employees have strong decision-making skills

Older workers are more conscientious, careful and organised when it comes to taking a decision at work than those in younger age groups, according to a new study.

Ageing does not correlate with deteriorating ability to think for ourselves, contrary to conventional wisdom that suggests cognitive function begins to decline in the mid-40s.

Researchers found older decision makers are as logically consistent as younger ones and that increased age alone was not a key factor in predicting impaired decision-making capacity.

Not all gamers are low scorers on relationships

Not all video game players are destined for lives filled with failing relationships and dwindling friendships, according to a study. A lot depends on the role of the game-playing activity in the gamer’s life.

It’s a common stereotype that if you play video games, you are a loner, but it may have more to do with how a person is involved in gaming.

In the study, gamers who organized their lives around gaming activities tended to experience a negative effect on their friendships and relationships. On the other hand, the researchers found that gamers who primarily played the game as a way to reinforce social bonds said they experienced higher levels of social ties and support.
