How to keep your home cool in summer
1 Change the drapes: Get white window shades, drapes, or blinds to reflect heat away from the house. Always remember that the best way to keep your home cool is to keep the heat out.
2 Sunscreens for windows: It’s a great idea to install sunscreens on the exterior of windows that receive direct sunlight to block sun from reaching the glass. These block as much as 60% - 80% of the sun’s heat from reaching the glass. Use tightly woven screens or bamboo shades outside the window during the summer to stop the sun’s heat from getting in.
3 Choose the right light: It’s better to turn off incandescent lights and heat-generating appliances much as possible. Instead, you could use Use florescent lighting, they consume less energy and heat.
4 Install air conditioners: In hot and humid climate, buy an air conditioner that will adequately get rid of high humidity. Models with variable or multi-speed blowers are generally the best.
5 Paint the roof white: If you’ve a roof in some bright colour, switch back to the original white for the season. It’s advisable to use a specially formulated reflective paints, they help in keeping the rooms much cooler in peak summer. They also block infrared rays and ultra violet rays.
