The definition of Freedom for most people would be a life without any responsibilities - "to be able to do whatever I want". Imagine people actually doing whatever they want - literally! That would produce anarchy! Freedom is the right to think, behave, speak (or not speak), worship (or not worship) and generally act by choice, without infringing on another person's space. This means I cannot just swing my fist into the space your nose happens to occupy just because I am free. Freedom comes with great responsibility.
From times immemorial, the human mind has always been trying to be free from the shackles of fear, guilt, hatred, pain, etc. and because of this, new philosophies, ideologies and religions were born, sciences were developed - all to allay and be free of these fears. However, each ideology brought with it its own slavery - where it was pre-decided what and how things were to be done. So in the search for freedom, people started becoming more bound, where they followed a specified set of people and rules instead of their own hearts.
Nothing in my belief system tells me that the universe or the creator wants me to suffer for myself or anyone else. And yet we suffer from all kinds of insecurities. No one likes to sleep with worries at night and wake up tired in the morning. And yet it happens. We are born free, but our thoughts limit us. It is not the outer world that needs fixing, but our own thoughts. The outer world is our own mirror image - a direct reflection of our thoughts. Changing our minds, seeing things differently - that is freedom.
Freedom is, by far, the most cherished and the most beautiful goal of human consciousness. It is being unapologetic about who you are and accepting your imperfections. It feels so incredibly free to just to say, "This is who I am in all my strengths and weaknesses and I am magnificent". Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes. It is not the absence of commitments but the ability to choose and to commit what is best for you. It is being true to oneself without any fears and discovering your own inner language, your own life's rules, and your own vision. Freedom is not about overcoming what stands in your way, but understanding that what is in your way, is part of the way. It is a personal revolution. You have to be free in your soul as that is the only freedom that there is. The habit of freedom has to be cultivated. For too long we have been bound by the restraints of societal norms and traditions. We are born free, to expand our horizons and push our limits to where we have never gone before. We are not born to hang out in our cosy comfort zones but to fly away and emancipate ourselves from mental slavery.
We have to practice freedom and not only claim it to experience it in totality. When you live in the past or the future you miss out on the freedom and peace in the now. Letting go gives us immense freedom and freedom is the only condition for happiness. Freedom and love are entwined - one without the other is like flying with one wing. A person, who is in love and free, is the most phenomenal thing in the world. True love is freedom - freedom from insecurities of loss and just gratitude for its presence. No one loses anyone as no one owns anyone.
In short, if you get the inside right, the outside just falls into place.
