Many fitness enthusiasts hit the gym regularly and yet they fall prey to the most common gymming myths. Here are a few gymming myths that you should be aware of before you hit the gym the next time.

Before you hit the gym, here are a few tips to get you started and bust common gymming myths. While some think that squats are bad for knees, others think that overdosing on crunches will lead to a flat belly. So, clear your head of these myths and start afresh.

Weight training bulks up the body

Male and female bodies respond to weight training in different ways. Male body produces a hormone called testosterone, which is essential if you want to gain size, but the female body does not. So, chances of getting bulky if you lift weights are nil. Instead, weight training will help you in toning up.

You should not work out during menstruation

You can, and you should work out during your menstrual cycle. Exercising during your period will help you reduce abdominal cramps. When you exercise, the body releases “feel-good” hormone called endorphins, which keep your brain calm and makes you feel better. However, avoid doing intensive exercise and skip the abs day. Light yoga stretches, cardio, swimming and light weight training are ideal.

More sweating means more weight loss

When you sweat, the body releases water and sodium, due to which you feel that you have lost weight. This illusionary loss is temporary, and comes back when you rehydrate yourself. Sweating is the body’s mechanism for cooling down.

To get a flat stomach, do a lot of crunches

If you want to lose that stubborn belly fat, crunches alone would not help you. You should train your lower extremities as well. Dead lifts, twists, leg raises and squats are effective in reducing belly fat.
