Anil Dhirubhai Ambani’s entertainment company has formed a separate firm with Hollywood producer David Linde to create an international platform for film production and financing. The firm has also established a production and distribution agreement with Universal Pictures.
Reliance Entertainment will provide the capital to finance the venture. “Reliance has already proven itself as a great partner; we look forward to working with them,” says Linde, who has been executive producer on several films like the multiple Oscar-winning Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), widely acclaimed Javier Bardem-starrer Biutiful (2010) and the Oscar-nominated Spanish film, Y Tu Mamá También (2001).
“David has proven himself as an adept builder of content-based companies over the years and Universal has been a beneficiary,” says Adam Fogelson, chairman, Universal Pictures.
Linde adds, “Universal gave me the time, money and space to form a plan that we all believe in and can execute.” Reliance will handle distribution of the films in India.
“We have the opportunity to tap into the global industry’s desire for films, at the same time, build a business that offers opportunities to our creative partners by harnessing traditional means of distribution as well as new technologies, platforms and markets,” says Linde.
