More than a month ahead of the North American release, Battleship rolls out throughout Europe and Asia this weekend and is poised to take on Wrath of the Titans, Titanic and The Hunger Games for the top spot in many markets.

The sci-fi action-thriller, based loosely on the Hasbro board game, follows a fleet of military ships facing an armada of alien watercraft and weaponry of unparalleled destruction, hellbent on "an extinction event," as the trailer calls the attack.

Starring John Carter's Taylor Kitsch, singer Rihanna in her first acting role, action movie go-to hero Liam Neeson, True Blood's Alexander Skarsgard, and former swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker, the film is directed by Peter Berg (Hancock).

Following the release schedule of films such as Rio, The Smurfs and The Adventures of Tintin, which had international appeal, as well as action pictures like John Carter and Fast Five, which performed well, this film rolls out around the world in advance of blockbusters such as The Avengers and other big May releases.

Battleship opens on April 19-20 in Russia, Eastern Europe and India, and then arrives in North America and Brazil in May.
