Stephen Frears will direct this drama based on the famous American cyclist's rise and fall from grace, Deadline.com reveals.
At age 32, Ben Foster is negotiating his participation in the new project, produced by Stephen Frears and Working Title Films. The star of 3:10 to Yuma and The Messenger is expected to play Lance Armstrong, whose reputation as an inspirational cancer survivor and seven-time Tour de France champion was upended by revelations of performance-enhancing drug use.
The Stephen Frears project will be up against three other works in progress on the subject. Paramount Pictures and JJ Abrams are looking into making their Armstrong biopic with Bradley Cooper in the lead.
Warner Bros, meanwhile, aims to tell the story through the eyes of Tyler Hamilton, who was Armstrong's teammate at times when he was allegedly using. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures is planning a documentary entitled The Armstrong Lie.
