The second, main trailer for director Christopher Nolan’s next film, Dunkirk is out and it is just as horrifying as everyone expected it to be.

The new trailer, at two minutes 26 seconds, is packed with gripping moments of tension and panic. The background theme for the film is haunting and perhaps inspired by Jaws’s now iconic music.

Dunkirk tells the tale of British and Allied forces stranded in Dunkirk and surrounded by the German Army during World War II.

While the first trailer dwelled more on the buildup up to the doom that is to fall on the beached soldiers, the latest shows what happens when it does. The new scenes have more action, more grenades, more torpedoes and a lot more hopelessness.

The quality and the sheer scale of the production reminds one of the films that Nolan has delivered so far- The Dark Knight Trilogy, Interstellar, Inception or Prestige. He has even said that Dunkirk is the ‘most human movie’ he has ever made.

When asked about why Nolan chose the story of Dunkirk for his next project, he said at CinemaCon in Las Vegas in April that it needed to be addressed in movies. “As a filmmaker you’re always looking for a gap in cultural movies and Dunkirk is a story British people are raised on. It’s in our DNA practically. But it has not been addressed in the movies. So for me, it was a very exciting gap. I’ve spent a number of years trying to figure out what’s the angle of approach, what’s the angle of attack for getting the story across? So we came upon the notion of creating a very experiential film, one that rather than trying to address the politics of the situation, the geopolitical situation, would really put you on the beach where 400,000 people are trapped, surrounded by the enemy closing in and faced with annihilation or surrender. The fact the story ended with neither annihilation nor surrender makes it one of the greatest stories in human history,” he had said.

The film stars Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh, as well as former One Direction singer Harry Styles. It is scheduled to release on July 21.
