The Fate of the Furious broke the record for the all-time top-grossing opening weekend with $532 million worldwide, which amounts to Rs 3400 crore.

The film narrowly beat out the previous record holder, 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which opened to $529 million.

In India, the movie was no slouch either. According to Box Office Mojo, the film has made $10 million since its Thursday debut, including paid previews beginning Wednesday evening. That is, Rs 67 crore.

The previous film in the franchise, Furious 7, crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in India when it opened in 2015. Its record was broken by The Jungle Book, which ended its run with approximately Rs 180 crore.

The Vin Diesel-Dwayne Johnson-starrer is the eighth film in the Fast & Furious franchise, which has earned $4.4 billion since its 2001 debut. A ninth instalment is scheduled for 2019, followed by the tenth film in 2021.
