Freida Pinto’s film Trishna hasn’t really impressed all overseas; beautiful but lifeless is what the critics have to say about the actor Hollywood actor of Indian origin, Fredia Pinto’s act in her latest film Trishna has received a tepid response so far.
While renowned critics worldwide appreciate the 27-year-old’s beauty, they are calling her performance ‘ifeless and confined in the drama.
Directed by Michael Winterbottom, the British film is an adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s novel, Tess of the d’Urbervilles. It was shot in Jaipur and Mumbai, and also stars British actor Riz Ahmed.
Having premiered at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, the film opened in the US on Friday to a limited release. Manohla Dargis of The New York Times calls Pinto “lovely, lifeless” in the flick.
She wrote, “Ms. Pinto is one of its (the film’s) loveliest attractions, but she and her director haven’t been able to give Trishna a pulse.” Wall Street Journal film reviewer Joe Morgenstern calls Pinto strikingly beautiful but feels she is limited by the confines of her role. Sheri Linden of the Los Angeles Times wrote, “Pinto has held the screen with her beauty but not left much of a lasting impression, is called upon to play a character of maddening passivity… though she maintains the enigma, at once rigid and malleable, little registers behind Trishna’s blankness.”
Philip French of The Observer, however, has a different opinion. “The movie is dominated by the performances of the beautiful Freida Pinto, who since her appearance in Slumdog Millionaire has become an international star.” Adds Alonso Duralde of The Wrap, “Pinto’s no slouch in the camera-loves-her department, her own passivity meshes with the character’s to an extent that her victimisation becomes hard to watch.” Release date of Trishna in India is yet to be decided.
