Filmmaker Guy Ritchie is reportedly in talks to direct Disney’s live action Aladdin film.
If Ritchie signs on to direct the film, it will reunite him with producer Dan Lin, who worked on the Sherlock Holmes movies.
Jonathan Eirich has signed on as executive producer and John August has written the script for the remake.
The film will reportedly feature many of the musical elements from the 1992 animated movie and filmmakers are still working on how to approach the Genie character in the film. The character in the animated film was voiced by the late Robin Williams.
The film was also adapted into a Broadway show in 2014.
Ritchie made his name directing snappy crime thrillers such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch that used the kind of non-linear storytelling Aladdin is aiming for. He last directed The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and is in postproduction on King Arthur, Warners’ upcoming take on the Camelot legend, reported The Hollywood Reporter.
