From child artist to member of boy band ‘N Sync to independent artist and now an actor, Justin Timberlake has never gone unnoticed since the ’90s. But, the 30-year-old says the major drift in his life — acting — is not as big a deal as it’s made out to be and, frankly speaking, he has no clue where he’s going.
“I have no idea what I’m doing, actually. I don’t take things that are out of my way. You see, there is a huge level of theatrics to my music and I’ve been acting like I can sing for years,” he says with an intense look on his face as we catch him during the promotion of his latest film, Friends With Benefits, in Cancun, Mexico.
Having already released in the US to positive reviews, it hits Indian screens in September.
“I don’t think I’d presume that I’d be great at anything. My first job was on a TV show. It’s funny to me that looking from the outside, my career in music and films seem so far apart.”
He goes on about the connection, “I don’t want to sound presumptuous but a lot of my music is very theatrical. It’s not me. Working in films is taking the music out of it.”
So, what’s easier... music, or acting? “I find every movie challenging because I like to torture myself,” he bursts into laughter.
And, he says there’s a lot more to do.
“In 10 years, I’ve only done two albums ... I’ve made my mistakes long ago but nothing could be subtle and out of court. I’m just joking ... It is hard to grow up in the public eye ... At the end of the day we are just people and we make mistakes!”
