When it comes to taking up challenges, no one can match a sportsperson’s spirit. The #IceBucketChallenge, which is making waves on social media with the likes of Bill Gates, Lady Gaga and Hollywood actors uploading videos of ice-cold water being poured on their heads in order to raise awareness about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), has found celeb supporters in India, too.
Tennis ace Rohan Bopanna took up the challenge, posted the video as the movement requires, and nominated others including actor Rahul Bose. However, Bose didn’t stand up to it and instead tweeted, “Hv decided not to waste clean water, but will donate!” But then, our other tennis star, Sania Mirza, took up the deed, not once but twice. She posted a video of “Take 2”, because,“Some people thought there wasn’t enough water”.

Mirza further nominated actor Ritiesh Deshmukh, tennis champ Mahesh Bhupathi and cricketer Yuvraj Singh to keep the chain going. The three men had 24 hours to pour icebucket on their heads, or else donate money towards the cause. Riteish replied to Sania with a cryptic “tic tok tic tok (sic)”, while Bhupathi, who is headed for the US Open, said, “What? Wait ... can’t do it on a plane, need an extension please.”
Bring on the Ice, Ice Baby!
Do you have the guts to pour a bucket of ice-cold water on your head? People worldwide — including filmstars, sportspersons, musicians and businessmen — are enthusiastically taking up the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness about a rare brain disease called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
Celebs such as talk show host Oprah Winfrey, Hollywood stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pratt, singers Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani, basketball player LeBron James and footballers Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar Jr and Paul Scholes, among many others, dared to take up the challenge and as part of the ongoing social media trend, then nominated their buddies to do the same within 24 hours or donate $100 towards the cause.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg also dared to drench himself in chilled water, after which he dared entrepreneur Bill Gates, among a few others, to do the same. Gates, in turn, went a step ahead to create a pulley-machine of sorts to complete the challenge differently.
When it was actor Charlie Sheen’s turn, the former Two and a Half Men star, instead of pouring freezing-cold water on himself, threw a tub full of money — $10,000 on himself. Not just that, Sheen challenged actors Ashton Kutcher, Jon Cryer and Chuck Lorre to do their bit for the cause in the same way. However, topping the list is popstar Lady Gaga, who not only soaked herself in cold water but also pledged to donate $10,000 to the cause.
While celebs are making news for accepting the challenge and posting videos of them in the act, not all are in for this icy phenomenon. For instance, at the time of going to press, there wasn’t any confirmation from US President Barack Obama if he’d dare to go for it, after he was challenged by none other than pop sensation Justin Bieber.
