The American director will begin developing this manga in 2017 after shooting the third installment of Avatar.
In the pipe for several years now, the film adaptation of the manga series Battle Angel Alita, known in Japan as Gunnm, has not been struck off James Cameron's schedule but placed on the back burner for the time being. The director wants to finish making the Avatar trilogy before starting in on the production of this live-action 3D sci-fi film.
Published in Japan from 1990 to 1995, Battle Angel Alita is set in the city of Scrapyard, in a post-apocalyptic world after a meteorite has collided with the earth and caused an ecological disaster. The heroine is an amnesiac female cyborg found in the local dump and repaired by a cybermedic expert. In this world of violence, corruption and murder with no law enforcement, Alita becomes a bounty hunter of cyborg criminals and then a player in the brutal sport of Motorball.
