It seems India is fast becoming a favoured shooting spot for Hollywood biggies. After Tom Cruise, now it’s actor Johnny Depp, who is believed to be India bound. Depp, 48, will travel to India towards the end of this year to promote his film, The Lone Ranger.
Walt Disney Movies have signed the actor for the film, which will be directed by Gore Verbinski. “Depp will be in Mumbai for the last leg of promotions for the film,” says an insider from the production house, on condition of anonymity.
Last year too there were reports that the star would be in India to shoot for director Mira Nair’s Shantaram, but his Indian fans were left disappointed when his trip was cancelled, as the film got shelved, reportedly due to a shortage of funds. In Lone Ranger, Depp will team up with actor Armie Hammer.
Disney has already completed the pre-production of the film and they are planning to start the shoot soon. Sources also reveal that the makers are planning a full-fledged promotion of the film here in India, and Depp will be in India for the same.
“It’s difficult to give the exact date of his arrival so early, because there are a lot of things yet to be sorted out before Disney decides its promotion time in India,” says the source.
While the finer details about the actor’s schedule in India are still being finalised, there are reports that Depp has expressed an interest in meeting Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan when he is in Mumbai. When contacted, the Disney spokesperson remained unavailable for comment.
Depp, who is known for his Pirates of The Caribbean series, has just completed shooting for his film, Dark Shadows, directed by Tim Burton.
