On May 17, 2005, Mallika Sherawat made a dazzling debut at Cannes. In a gold dress and jewellery worth Rs 4.5 crore, she posed with her The Myth co-stars, Jackie Chan and Kim Hee Seon. Last year, she created history while promoting Hissss, by entering the Majestic Hotel with a snake.
Now, she’s back at the French Riviera with her new movie, Love, Barack, and before leaving, was tight-lipped about her wardrobe. Would she be wearing the Stars and Stripes given that the film’s poster has her wrapped in the American flag? “Wait and watch,” she smiled. “There are no snakes and the only animals I can think of are the donkey and the elephant, symbols of America’s Democratic and Republican Party,” pointed out the actor who plays a Democratic volunteer who falls for her Republican counterpart, Brain J White.
Her character, Aretha Gupta, is loosely modelled on San Francisco attorney general Kamala Harris. Gupta campaigns for President Barack Obama whose double plays a part in this tongue-in-cheek take on politics.
“I too will campaign for President Obama in the next elections,” said the actor, who met him at the White House Correspondents Dinner and invited him to her film’s premiere recently.
“He said he’d love to come. Oscar winner Ruby Dee, my grandmother in the film, is one of his favourite actors. Hope-fully we’ll get him. The President loves Bollywood movies and waved out to my Indian fans in a video we shot.” She was invited to the White House for a poetry reading session on May 11. “But I have to be at Cannes today,” said the actor.
