Paul Bettany gets chatty about his controversial roles and love for dark films
Actor Paul Bettany, 39, seems to have developed a penchant for religiously controversial roles like the ones in Creation, The Da Vinci Code, Legion and now Priest, where he plays a warrior priest who rebels against the Church because it ignores the growing vampire threat.
The movie is releasing worldwide in 3D format on Friday. “I love vampire movies, though weirdly, Priest doesn’t feel like one, as our vampires are not like any other ones I have ever seen. These are really different and have more in common with a sort of alien and amphibious creatures. It’s funny because everyone talks about re-envisioning vampires, but they never do. Ours don’t wear nice clothes and drive cars,” says the actor, who just can’t get over Dracula.
Action-oriented in his approach, Bettany also likes to do his own stunts in movies. “I do as much as I can. Take for example the bike (in Priest), which is incredibly dangerous. I spent a long time learning to ride it,” says Bettany, who has some pet stunts, too. “I love doing the wire stuff. What’s the point if you’re in an action movie and you’re not really part of the action!” he says.
