Jesse Eisenberg has opened up about his role as Superman’s nemesis Lex Luthor in an interview with MTV (via Collider).Unlike Gene Hackman’s Luthor, who was an over-the-top megalomaniac, and Kevin Spacey’s version, which was heavily inspired by Hackman’s, Eisenberg’s iteration occurs in the post-Nolan age where comic book characters are supposed to based in reality, preferably, as Eisenberg puts it, with a ‘diagnosable’ problem.

"There’s an emotional core to character. It’s not a silly villainous character," he told MTV. "…it is an entirely different thing. Also, the tone of that [‘Superman’] movie is so different, like that movie wouldn’t be made now. Like the way we expect movies to be now is to have some kind of — I mean, it’s probably for the best — there’s some kind of psychological accuracy. That the person is coming from a place probably diagnosable in some way."
Man of Steel was a divisive film to say the least: Many felt that director Zack Snyder’s take on the character was overly dour. The same tone seems to be in play with whatever we’ve seen of its sequel, the hugely anticipated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. What we can be sure of however, is that Eisenberg’s Luthor will be unique and tremendously formidable. He has to be: He’s the reason the Justice League comes into existence.
